Get Thee to a Fair

My first-ever phone post. Excellent.

Dropped my goods off at the State Fair this morning. I snagged this pic on my way out. Farmilicious. More to come on this post in a bit.

Update, 11:50 a.m.:
Vicki at Chromatics did an amazing job
I picked up my State Fair entry photos from Chromatics last night. In less than a day Vicki managed to create an amazing 8x8 print of my Holga pheasant. She mounted both of my pics and they look fabulous. Chromatics really is the only game in town when it comes to developing and printing. I'm so damn glad I found them (and I swear, they're not paying me a dime).

Since I've never entered something at the fair, I wasn't certain where to take my stuff, what info needed to be on the mounting board, what to expect in general. For anyone who enters next year (assuming we have another State Fair...the photo chairwoman was surprised we had one this year and said it will be year-by-year in the future...imagine telling the grandkiddos I won that ribbon at the very LAST State Fair in Tennessee...how sad):

  • Prints must be 5x7 inches minimum
  • They must be mounted on 16x20 inch board
  • You don't have to put info on the back but I think it's a good idea in case the claim ticket gets lost
  • Take the images to the Creative Arts building at the State Fair Grounds, where you'll find very friendly, helpful people who log entries
I had a quick look at some of the photos that were dropped off earlier. There are some amazing photographers in this area. The competition makes me nervous. I was encouraged that there were no other entries in the "Amateur: Bird Life B&W" category. Perhaps I'll win by default, just like the one wrestling match I won in 7th grade (the only wrestling match I won in 7th grade) when the other school resigned because their wrestler was sick. NB: I placed fifth in the city and third in the district in my weight class--out of five and three respectively. I found it interesting that every shot I saw in the "Amateur: Portrait" category was of a child. Lots of proud parents out there.

I took a couple of pinhole photos while I was there...one of the milking parlor and the other in the pulling shed. The pulling shed, which is basically a roof on stilts, seemed way too open but some people are exhibitionists.

Fingers crossed for me. If you get a chance to go to the State Fair and see my photos please let me know what you think.

  2. Hi Donna,
I won first and third place in my categories :)
I did enter again. Three categories this time. I'm interested to see how I do...there's some tough competition there.
Best of luck to you. Let me know how you do.
